Ludlow Youth Festival
Wednesday, September 8th, 2010The Ludlow Youth Festival was a great success. ‘Scrappies’ helped to make shields that would prove to be invaluable against a water spitting robot and an impending water ‘fight’!

Lesley McKnight has just completed a series of workshops for Shropshire Libraries to support their Summer reading challenge of ’Space Hop’. Here are some photos from the various events.
Lesley McKnight will be representing Scrappies at the ‘Funday’ Monday programme in Shrewsbury on 2nd and 9th August. Craft work this year will be based on recycling the ‘plastic’ bottle. She says she would be very obliged if members could bring in any small, colourful drinks bottles like ‘fruit shoot’ as she intends to make garden flowers out of them. This is a public ‘drop in’ and therefore the demand will be high and we’ll need lots of bottles. If you have them, please wash them out and bring them over. Thanks. Here are some examples, click on them to enlarge them:
We are offering 5 FREE workshops for adults during that week. Please note that some of the details listed here differ from the listings on our flyer and in the Southern Shropshire Partnership brochure. The list below is correct (I hope!). Here it is:
Saturday May 15th 1pm – 3:30pm Polymer clay sculpture. I’m teaching this workshop and I’ll be showing you how to sculpt a head (at any scale from railway miniatures to busts).
Monday May 17th 10am – 12:30pm Beginner Rag Rug Making. Irene Briscoe will be introducing you to this ancient and decorative craft.
Monday May 17th 1pm – 3:30pm Crochet for Beginners. Jan Parry creates lots of wonderful garments in crochet and she’ll get you started on the basics.
Thursday May 20th 10:30am – 1pm Weaving Workshop. Lesley McKnight will guide you as you create a decrative weaving using recycled fabrics.
Thursday May 20th 2pm – 4pm. Bracelet Making. Laura Wilson is teaching this workshop and the end product will be a beautiful bracelet.
All of the workshops are free, thanks to the Southern Shropshire Partnership, but we do need you to register so we can make sure we have sufficient materials. Please send e-mail to info@scrappies.org or phone 01694 722511.
These ‘jolly’ dinosaurs were made recently at Woodfield primary school in a workshop directed by our own Lesley McKnight. Aren’t they wonderful? Click on each image to enlarge it.

As we prepared to open the shop, Irene worked on her paperwork ….

Jan Parry sorted and priced supplies
Roy Westerman put the first coat of paint on the walls …..
and Lois Rose and John Arnfield painted the shelves to match!
All too soon, the great day arrived and Heather Kidd cut the ribbon.
Now we’re officially open!
Church Stretton’s new mayor – Bob Welch – had a few kind words to say!
Genevieve Tudor from Radio Shropshire interviewed several volunteers including Lois Rose.
Pam Booth was stationed outside the new shop to meet and greet shoppers and guests.
Janice Parry helped shoppers with their purchases.
Joan Arnfield discussed simple puppet making with Lesley McKnight.
John Roberts and Laura Wilson worked the counter.
Irene Briscoe and Lois Rose had big smiles - all the hard work is over (for the moment)!
Sheila Peacock cut a roll of paper backed fabric for a member.
One of the puppets constructed during opening day – I think it’s a punky cat!
Another puppet – this one seems to be a very tall, flightless bird!
